Upon admission to Morning Star Boys' Ranch some boys attend the Transition School,
which is a collaboration project with Spokane School District 81. Following an assessment and
evaluation, an appropriate educational plan is developed. This plan may allow for the boy to
remain in attendance at the Transition School or move to a District 81 school in the community.
The purpose of the transition school is twofold.
| Its primary purpose is to provide a safe and
nurturing temporary school placement. Boys entering the Ranch are undergoing a major life change.
This temporary placement helps them settle into their new lifestyle before having to adjust to the stresses of a
large public school. | |
| The secondary purpose of the school is to provide a small and very structured
school. This helps these young men learn the social, behavioral and organizational skills necessary to
be successful in a middle school or high school setting. Boys who have had behavioral or academic problems
in their previous school now have a safe environment to practice and master skills for success.
The average student remains in the program for one to two semesters. On rare occasions a student may
remain in the program for two to three school years. Long-term placement depends on the progress
of the student and his readiness to succeed in another program.
